進撃の巨人
I'm sorrry, さとうせんせい. しばたせんせい, すみません.
進撃の 巨人わみません。
If Japanese manga and anime did not entice you into taking the language, then you are probably one of the minority. Before I got into プリンストン I prided myself on my knowledge of manga.
Coming into プリンストン, I have found that many people agree. So honestly, what am I doing that I haven't seen Attack on Titan yet? I even told my friend about it
Honestly, though, watching the manga should help me with my にほんご. And also give me something to enjoy over あきやすみ. I am kind of excited, after hearing the hype behind it. Hopefully, when we return, I can talk about the show then.
ジャまた!

Can we take some time here to applaud the people who don't take Japanese, but still watch manga? You gotta love it.

Avatar: The Last Airbender
きょうに ユーツベを みません。アヴァタル テェ ラスト アイルベンデルを みません。
How can I describe this show? Awesome. スばらしい。Somehow, some people out there combined the best of what Japan and America had to offer and create this show that was outstanding. From the romance, to the action, to the adventure, to the laughs, to the tears, I stuck by this show. I mean, [spoiler alert] the good guy has to deal with tremendous pressure, the bad guy becomes the deuteragonist - and goes on to have the best character arc ever - and they manage to throw in an amazing blind fighter. And the humor is great: the cabbage man. Uncle Iroh. And Sokka. This show went on to have three epic seasons, a sequel and a huge following, and debatably - for what it did - the best. It was intense for a Nickelodeon show, drawing people from age 2 to age 20.
Is there a parallel to be made about this show and us? Perhaps. We live in a Western civilization, but we are learning about an eastern language. Similar to how the show combined American and Asian elements, we are trying to add an extra level to ourselves. If we combine these two, we will be much more than what we are now. Maybe this knowledge can inspire us to work harder.
Or maybe it will just make you watch the show. (Or in my case, re-watch it).
Does the Anime Club take requests? I think I have one...
Here are two videos that I found on Youtube. Just a little something to make sure you remember the awesomeness that we are striving for. Or something to convince you to watch the show. Eh. じゃまた!
P.S. The second video has kanji. While it is Chinese, since Japanese Kanji is based off of Chinese kanji, it is possible that this may help later on! Here are what they mean, from raven:
0:01 - strength/power (Toph)
0:02 - love/caring (Katara)
0:04 - courage/valor (Sokka)
0:05 - hero (Aang)
0:06 - humility (Zuko)
0:12 - water/ice
0:14 - earth/metal
0:18 - fire/lightning
chorus: (same throughout)
0:24 - luck
0:25 - skill
0:29 - pleasure
0:31 - pain
0:32 - remember the name
0:47 - determination
0:49 - fearless
0:50 - fighter (yeah Toph!)
0:53 - teamwork
0:57 - wicked
1:08 - distrust (poor Zuzu)
1:47 - Raven (the person that made the video)
P.P.S. There is a good chance that this show will come up in the future!
P.P.S. Please comment, whether or not you agree with me, or which video you liked the most, or whatever! I want to see what you guys think!

First Things First
こんいちわ。
Goal statement:
To me, first things come first. I feel as though to speak a language, I should better my vocabulary. Things like intonation and pitch, I believe, can come through trial and error. But studying vocabulary seems to be the best way to learn the language. However, I do realize that my word pitch and "flow" could be much better. I will try to work on that in the following weeks.
Activities:
So much to do, so little time. There are many things that I want to do. First, I would like to make a Japanese 101 study group. Secondly, I want to watch more anime and manga (shocker). I can't wait to tell my parents that I'm watching cartoons for Princeton University. But I also want to go to office hours consistently, and I want to make the Japanese table on Tuesdays a priority. I will also try to read the textbook and listen to the cd much more often.
It's been great talking to you! ジャまた。
P.S. I will try to post a pic of a cool anime/manga every day...I know we all love it. I've posted some pics previously; here is today's!
